We've been studying birds lately using Jeanie Fulbright's Exploring Creation With Zoology 1: Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day. One of our recent lessons was on birds feathers. We discussed the anatomy of a feather as well as the various types of feathers birds have and what they are used for. Here is a picture of my 3 yo looking intently to see if he can see the barbs and barbules hooked together like a zipper.
A few days after this lesson we were discussing feathers with Daddy. Daddy was so interested he got out his big microscope (it's one he uses for work so we don't play with it) and everyone got a chance to take a look at the feather under high magnification. It was really neat. We were able to actually see the hooks on the contour feathers. Then, we moved the focus down to the bottom of the feather where it was all fly away fluffy and looked again. There the vanes were smooth w/ no hooks on them.

I love that you are doing flying creatures right now because it's the one we plan to do next after swimming creatures. Keep posting about your lessons- it will be fun to see what is ahead for us. :-)
